LEGO Building Challenge: The Results

Tap to see all the results.

A month ago, I signed up Ayra and Aleesa for a LEGO building competition hosted by Repsol. You can read about it here.

So, for the past 4 weekends, we've been surrounded by a sea of LEGO bricks. They were everywhere! The toughest part about building from scratch was finding the right pieces in the right colors.

If you're lucky, you may be able to actually see submissions from other contestants by browsing through #RepsolLegoChallenge on the social media (Facebook, Instagram, etc.).

Anyway, here's what the girls have been up to and how they did in the competition:

Week 1: Animals

Category 1: Build your favorite animal and tell us why.

It was really hard to get creative with this one. So, we helped Aleesa out with her DUPLO whale and get her into the tub for her video. She ended up winning 3rd place. It was really unexpected!

Category 2: Build your very own personalized zoo.

Building this was a lot of fun. The many LEGO pieces we have in the stash helped loads.

We used a pre-built alligator head fort from a Chima LEGO set as the zoo entrance, added a few standout features like picture booth, ice cream stall and petting zoo, and produced a kick-ass video for submission. Ayra won 1st place for her "Awesome Zoo".

Out of the four of Ayra's videos, this is my favorite.

Week 2: Amazing Architecture

Category 1: Build a pyramid and tell us what’s unique about it.

This week's challenge was easy to get creative. We helped Aleesa to put together a really elaborate, out-of-this-world pyramid, with slides and pool, and called it the "Pyramid of Fun".

For her video, we got Aleesa to put on Ayra's genie outfit (from one of her school concerts) and dance to a tune from Aladdin. With the A+ effort she put in, she certainly got the 1st place she deserved.

Of all of Aleesa's videos, this is everyone's favorite.

Category 2: Build a famous landmark and why you’ve picked it.

Ideas were all over the place; From PETRONAS Twin Towers to Eiffel Tower to Taj Mahal to Big Ben. We then playfully started building the Tower Bridge and as it was taking shape, we decided to continue until the end. We were running out of LEGO pieces in the right colors and had to improvise.

To our surprise, the Tower Bridge turned out exceptionally well. We added a backdrop (with clouds and a hot air balloon) to spruce up the overall look and edited the video with a Beethoven song to bring out the Brit. Alhamdulillah, Ayra once again topped the week's challenge!

Week 3: Terrific Transportation

Category 1: Build your favorite mode of transportation and tell us why you picked it.

Bought a pack of balloons for this week's challenge. So, figured it'd be unique to build a hot air balloon for Aleesa's Peppa Pig's family. It ended up looking too plain when compared to the rest of the contestants'. Aleesa did not make the Top 3.

Category 2: Build a balloon powered car and tell us why it is unique.

We decided to take it easy this time. Instead of building something new from scratch, we engineered a few pre-built LEGO cars we have in the stash. It wasn't as easy as we would've hoped because most of them were too heavy to be moved by a balloon.

We also came up with an interesting storyline and a race scene for the video.

For Ayra, this was the most boring week as she didn't get to create something new and extravagant. So, we put a bit more effort into the video, which took me the most time to edit because of the different scenes involved. Unexpectedly, Ayra won 1st place again!

This is my wife's and Daanish's favorite video of Ayra's.

Week 4: Brilliant Builders

Category 1: Build your dream house and tell us why it is unique.

Since it's the final challenge, we used up all the DUPLO pieces we have to build this masterpiece. It even had sounds and music coming out of it! Aleesa also seemed to enjoy building it. This video required a bit more talking from her, which she did very well.

The competition was fierce and she got 2nd place for her "Magical House".

Category 2: Build an offshore oil rig or a futuristic robot and tell us why you picked it.

Building a robot was too cliché. So, we decided to build an offshore rig. This time, we started a bit earlier as it required a bit more work and research. We also built a helicopter and a cargo ship to make it more lively. The video was about my job.

Ayra didn't manage to keep her winning streak as she came out second best in this final challenge.

This is Ayra's favorite challenge and she wants to keep the offshore rig we built for as long as she could. The video is also Ayra's favorite one of all.

LEGO Overdose Was So Much Fun

Reading the announcement on a Friday afternoon used to be the highlight of the week. It was never about winning, although, scrolling through the announcement and finding the girls' pictures among the Top 3's every single week made it sweeter than it already was.

We will surely miss this moment.

Baskin Robbin's ice cream for winning Week 1.

The girls gave their best week after week and were very happy with the results. They were very cooperative in making the videos. That's why every single one turned out so impressive. Daanish also helped out so much and the girls have promised to share their winnings with him.

We are still waiting for their prizes for Week 2, 3 and 4. They are hoping to get some online shopping vouchers so that they can pick their own prizes.
